Swedish meatballs or Köttbullar are such a good meal for a cold winter day. The savory meatballs combine with the creamy beef gravy so well and when served over egg noodles you have perfect meal that will leave you full and satisfied. The meatballs are usually smaller than normal meatballs and seasoned with spices such as nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, cloves and allspice to give them a unique taste.
Swedish Meatballs aren't actually from Sweden, they actually were brought back from Turkey by King Charles XII after his exile to Istanbul from 1709-1714 so technically they are Turkish. The Swedes however have taken this dish up as their own and it is one of the most popular dishes in Sweden. Authentic Köttbullar are traditionally served with creamy beef gravy, mashed potatoes, cucumber pickles and lingonberry preserve, however I prefer to serve mine with some type of wide noodle.
Lets get into this recipe!
